Provider Insights

Insights from Oncologists and Hematologists

Xcenda market research has collected a wealth of insight into how and why medical providers make the choices they do relative to patient treatment. A small assortment of the non–client-sponsored key insights that our research and analyses uncovered earlier in 2009 is listed below.

  • In the 2008/2009 economic downturn, 64% of our consultants report having experienced a decrease in practice profitability based on:

    -   patients declining to consider as much salvage therapy and turn to earlier BSC
    -   patients unable to afford the same level of care as before due to loss of insurance coverage
    -   or both
  • Over the past year, 42% of consultants report an increased rate of referral of patients to a hospital (or similar venue) for IV therapy based on changes in individual insurance coverage
  • Within the past year, 21% of consultants report having initiated prophylactic low- or full-dose anticoagulation in at least one solid tumor patient because of plans to begin bevacizumab as part of anti-tumor management
  • Based on data from over 1,500 medical oncology consultants studied since mid-2005, the combination of gemcitabine + erlotinib has become the most frequently prescribed first-line therapy for patients with advanced pancreas cancer
  • Despite the absence of Phase 3 data to support the approach, nearly 50% of medical oncology consultants report plans to prescribe adjuvant chemotherapy to a fit individual under the age of 50 following complete resection of a T1N0 NSCLC
  • Physician awareness of relevant news releases concerning Phase 3 trials that appear in the non-medical media is much more limited than anticipated— (eg, the specific indications for pemetrexed in NSCLC based on histology and approved platinum partner were each known by fewer than 20% of a cadre of medical oncology consultants studied 5 days after the FDA decision was reported)
