Unveiling the Mysteries of Pharmacoeconomic Models: A Look at the Methods, Data Sources, and Applications
Where: San Diego Convention Center, Room 6F
When: Wednesday, April 7, 2010, from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
The managed care literature, as well as product dossiers and manufacturer product presentations, are replete with economic models designed to demonstrate the value of drug products or medical interventions and their impact on healthcare resource utilization and cost. Economic models are used to approximate what will likely happen under certain conditions when actual outcomes are either not known or the data to evaluate the outcomes are not available.
This workshop will discuss pharmacoeconomic methods in general and economic models in particular and will examine their applications in managed care decision making. The presentations will explore the sources of data used to populate economic models and will illustrate by case examples the use of real-world data in developing an economic model. Emphasis will be on the appropriate use and interpretation of pharmacoeconomic models and the limitations commonly associated with models.
Learning Objectives:
Intended Audience:
Individuals who have a basic understanding of the principles and methods of pharmacoeconomics and economic modeling and wish to develop a better understanding of these techniques, their limitations, and appropriate use will benefit from participation from this workshop. This advanced-level workshop would also be appropriate for individuals who have previously attended the Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy’s (FMCP) educational program “Application of Pharmacoeconomic Data to Formulary Decision Making” or a similar level of training and experience.
